People worry about kids playing with guns, and teenagers watching violent videos; we are scared that some sort of culture violence will take them over. Nobody worries about kids listening to thousands- literally thousands -of songs about broken hearts and rejection and pain and misery and loss. The unhappiest people I know, romantically speaking, are the ones who like pop music the most; and I don’t know whether pop music has caused this unhappiness, but I do know that they’ve been listening to the sad songs longer than they’ve been living the unhappy lives.

On Wednesday night, Caleb Medley advanced out of the first round of the Denver Comedy Works annual “New Faces Contest.” On Thursday night, Medley took his pregnant wife, Katie (due date: today), to see the midnight screening of The Dark Knight Rises.

That midnight screening. The Medleys were victims of the Aurora massacre.

Caleb was shot in the face, losing an eye and suffering brain damage. He’s in an Aurora hospital in a coma. Katie and unborn baby were unharmed.

They do not have health insurance.

Friends, family and loved ones have set up a site to raise money to cover an estimated $500,000 in hospital bills for them both.
